fake hate crimes: a database of hate crime hoaxes in the usa

The purpose of this site is to compile a comprehensive database of the false reports of "hate crimes" committed (mostly) in the USA. It builds on the work of Laird Wilcox, whose Crying Wolf (PDF) is the original book on this subject. The books Hate Crime Hoax and Hate Crimes: Criminal Law & Identity Politics are recommended, as are the websites Watching the Watchdogs and Fake Hate Map.

A conservative site reports on teenager Alexandra Pennell at Central Connecticut State University claiming that homophobic notes were slid under her door. Police installed a camera, but more notes appeared. The camera was disconnected each time. She said she disconnected it accidentally. Police installed a second, secret camera. This caught her putting a note under her own door. "When confronted with the video evidence, Pennell said she had only planted one or two notes; after being told the camera had been running a long time, she admitted to all of them, saying she did it because she wanted her roommate to spend more time with her."
