summary
After the murder of an Ethiopian named Mulugeta Seraw by neo-Nazi skinheads in Portland in 1988, the SPLC's Morris Dees sued a man called Tom Metzger, the leader of a group named White Aryan Resistance. Dees claimed Metzger sent skinheads from California to Oregon, and caused Seraw's death. Dees's star witness was a gangly, bespectacled punk named Dave Mazzella who claimed (rather unconvincingly) that Metzger had sent him north to incite Portland skinheads to racist mayhem. The jury believed him, and ordered Metzger to pay damages of $12.5 million.
