fake hate crimes: a database of hate crime hoaxes in the usa

The purpose of this site is to compile a comprehensive database of the false reports of "hate crimes" committed (mostly) in the USA. It builds on the work of Laird Wilcox, whose Crying Wolf (PDF) is the original book on this subject. The books Hate Crime Hoax and Hate Crimes: Criminal Law & Identity Politics are also recommended.

summary
TV personality Morton Downey Jr claimed that three neo-Nazi skinheads drew a swastika on his face in the men's bathroom at San Francisco airport. The police didn't believe him. No-one else had seen the incident, and he didn't have a swastika on his face. He later admitted it was a hoax. One of his former producers said his show was unsuccessful, and he was trying to attract attention and sympathy.
