fake hate crimes: a database of hate crime hoaxes in the usa

The purpose of this site is to compile a comprehensive database of the false reports of "hate crimes" committed (mostly) in the USA. It builds on the work of Laird Wilcox, whose Crying Wolf (PDF) is the original book on this subject. The books Hate Crime Hoax and Hate Crimes: Criminal Law & Identity Politics are also recommended.

summary
Quentin E Banks, a black student at NW Missouri Uni. claimed racially motivated assault and death threats. As many as 15 black students found Ku Klux Klan flyers on windshields. Rumors of a KKK 'klavern' swept the adademy. Then Banks admitted he'd faked it. Before the FBI-induced fess-up, the president of the university said: "We believe the klavern is made up of about five students, who are distributing the leaflets and letters on the students' cars and under their doors. The U.S. Marshall's office and the FBI have told us that this is a violation of the students' civil rights. We'll catch one of 'em these days at it."
