fake hate crimes: a database of hate crime hoaxes in the usa

The purpose of this site is to compile a comprehensive database of the false reports of "hate crimes" committed (mostly) in the USA. It builds on the work of Laird Wilcox, whose Crying Wolf (PDF) is the original book on this subject. The books Hate Crime Hoax and Hate Crimes: Criminal Law & Identity Politics are also recommended.

summary
Michael A Smith, a white student at Ohio Dominican College, was arrested for sending threatening letters to 13 black students and faculty. In fact, they were faked by a black teacher, Janice D Hamlet, who wanted to get at the student for using the n-word in an essay on prejudice. Whereas Smith was initially arrested and suspended without a hearing, the administration took a more lenient line with Hamlet. Her academic career continues, while Smith won damages from his former alma mater.
