fake hate crimes: a database of hate crime hoaxes in the usa

The purpose of this site is to compile a comprehensive database of the false reports of "hate crimes" committed (mostly) in the USA. It builds on the work of Laird Wilcox, whose Crying Wolf (PDF) is the original book on this subject. The books Hate Crime Hoax and Hate Crimes: Criminal Law & Identity Politics are also recommended.

summary
Sabrina Collins, a student at Emory University, claimed to be on the receiving end of racist death threats. Police eventually said she did it herself. They found the threats contained errors she commonly made. "It doesn't matter to me whether she did it or not, because of all the pressure these black students are under at these predominantly white schools" said a member of the local NAACP. "If this will highlight it, if it will bring it to the attention of the public, I have no problem with that". This amounts to saying lying about hate crimes is a good thing. The local prosecutor said he won't pursue Collins because she needs counseling, not prosecution.
