fake hate crimes: a database of hate crime hoaxes in the usa

The purpose of this site is to compile a comprehensive database of the false reports of "hate crimes" committed (mostly) in the USA. It builds on the work of Laird Wilcox, whose Crying Wolf (PDF) is the original book on this subject. The books Hate Crime Hoax and Hate Crimes: Criminal Law & Identity Politics are also recommended.

summary
The murder of Mulugeta Seraw by neo-Nazi skinheads in Portland in 1988 is almost universally regarded as a prime example of a hate crime. Elinor Langer's book "A Hundred Little Hitlers" has a slightly different view. "She shows great bravery as she paints a picture that isn't always politically correct in the delicate world of race relations". This review of her book by an ex-cop who was involved in the case sheds a quite different light on the tragedy.
